Lying for the good of society

It seems that everyone other than me thinks that we should keep religion, since society needs an idea of "Truth" and "Good," to function. However, aren't we just proposing a society where the truth is hidden, and people are indoctrinated to believe in irrational and illogical things which go against everything else they know to be true. Won't people begin to see through these lies?
On the other hand, I can't refute the fact that ever since Jesus spread the word of God, all poverty and suffering have been ended, and that all Christians are completely moral people, while all atheists are godless child abusing homosexual cannabalistic murderers.

  1. I'm not saying that all societies necessarily need a concrete idea of "Truth" and "Good" to function, but that at the intellectual level our society is at now, our society does indeed rests on concrete ideas of Truth and Good. In fact the truth is hidden (although I'm not really sure which truth you're talking about), but it will take some time before all citizens are introspective enough to believe in philosophies that don't fall in on themselves. Perhaps people will begin to see through their lives, just as you, for example, have begun to see through the lies. But that is a personal revelation that we cannot force onto others. Dragging them out of the cave before they're ready is all too painful to bear-- anarchy would persist, people would burn shit down. If the cave is comfortable at this point in time and induces a well-behaved society, we should let it be.
